As much as I love my home in MN, it’s a frozen hellscape right now with no mountains. I need to get out west again.

As someone originally from that frozen hellscape, I understand. This is why I live out west now

Buffalo is a frozen hellscape too, but we have some “mountains” so it helps a little.

Drift.

Snow drifting on the reg is how I don’t hate winter.

For me it is all about having both the ocean and mountains in the same place! Plus only having to drive about 20 minutes from home to get to both, or even less if I just want mountains. If I could get to the roof of my apartment building and it was a clear day, I would certainly have 360 degrees of mountains in the distance.

Growing up in NJ, I was used to accepting a solid 2-4 hour drive to get to anything remotely resembling a mountain but at least having the ocean 15-20 minutes away. Its so much cooler having both in the same place and so much closer. I really enjoy flying into California during the day though, the commanding views of the Sierra Nevadas is wild. I always wish the plane had a front facing camera available on the seatback screens, I would watch that shit all the time.

I don’t hate winter per se, but I miss mountains more than I don’t dislike winter if that makes sense.

Also, the supra does not see snow. MN Salt would rust the poor thing into nothing in about 5 minutes. I daily a civic SI, so less snow drifting and more snow e-brake hooning.

I couldn’t do Washington, have no interest in Oregon, and can’t and will probably always refuse to live in California. If anything I’d end up in SLC.

Were I ever to move west, I’d probably settle on a suburb of SLC. I love that place.

But does it actually snow all that much in MN? I ran into this problem in NJ, since it didnt snow very much but was cold, icy, and salty as fuck all the time anyways. So you got all of the downsides of winter and rarely any of the fun fluffy white stuff to play in.

I’ve been to both coasts and across both mountain ranges in the continental US, as pretty as the appalachians and associated subranges are, the western US does far more for me.

Assuming you are in the cities.... go south. The MN/WI border to be specific, some nice bluffs down by Redwing and such. Granted, they are no mountains but twisty roads can be found there. Alternately, head North: Lutsen Ski resort at least was considered at one time the most mountain like skiing between Vermont and Colorado.

Me too. I lived in Arizona for a couple years. I loved the weather and having the mountains nearby, we moved back to Wisconsin though because A) wasn’t sure about job security and B) we spent ALL of our vacation time going home to visit family it seemed. I love Wisconsin, but still wish I was out west often.

But the Mormons! Haha I do like Salt Lake though, that is quite the place to be for easy access to skiing. I can’t really drive anywhere conveniently for skiing for where I am now. Mammoth is about the only option for real skiing within driving distance and with traffic its just as far as flying to SLC anyways. Being able to get to the mountains so easily and the weather being so mild all the time makes it worth dealing with California for me. But I really did love the stuff I was driving through in NM and AZ on the way out here. And I REALLY need to explore the PNW, the rockies in CO, and more of UT. I am sure that I would enjoy that stuff a lot.

I’d imagine they would have plenty of snow this winter, seeing how Michigan does. The last couple of winters weren’t great but the weather seems to be playing catch up.

Doesnt Michigan get the lake effect stuff though, whereas MN being on the wrong side of the lake for that would lower things a bit.

Half of MN is covered in lakes. Last time I went home in the winter you couldn’t see the ground at all anywhere, even with salt and plows, and it stayed that way for the whole week I was there. This isn’t unusual. There’s a reason it’s often referred to as MinneSNOWta.

Yeah I’m familiar. My local subaru club (I previously owned two LGT wagons) does a cruise from the cities to La Crosse every year. We take some fun roads down, on the way back home I’ll usually take the Wisconsin side up and do WI35 up to about Hastings.

If you want a quick fun route from White Bear to Stillwater, let me know :)

Utah is like Physics. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction... In the SLC metro for every mormon there’s an equal and opposite non-mormon. Almost everyone, however, is super nice. Great local brewing too, Wasatch Brewing makes two of my favorite beers.

I also love it because it’s so central to the western US. You’re a single day drive (within 12 hours) of literally anywhere on the west coast (Seattle to San Diego), Montana, Wyoming, Denver is like 7 hours, Vegas is 4 and a half, anywhere in Arizona and New Mexico as well.

There’s also a thriving car enthusiast community, fantastic driving roads, and yes, access to skiing. My avatar is on the Timpanogos pass south of downtown by Orem/Lehi. It’s one of my favorite places in the country to drive.

I spent some time in AZ at Ft. Huachuca, and have visited the Grand Canyon (obviously from the lead picture lol), Flagstaff and Tuscon. I enjoyed it.

Haha I really do not know my geography anywhere between like Ohio and Colorado. Its all a big unknown to me. That makes a lot of sense though for sure.

I definitely need to go check that Timpanogos pass then over the summer! It’s funny how you say “only a 12 hour drive” though. But everything is so much more spread out here than back East that I am used to. I will be skiing at Alta starting tomorrow for four days. I am especially pumped about that!

I have a propensity for road trips, consider anything I can get to in one day a short drive. Usually that’s Minneapolis to Denver, but it’s been Salt Lake City to Seattle or Nashville to Minneapolis. And once, Flagstaff to Des Moines before a two hour nap, then to Minneapolis.

Depends what part of the state your in. But just because I said that, some part of the state will probably get hammered this week with snow and another spot will see 70 degree weather on the same day.
